Breeder Awards

In 2009, the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund paid $6,300,452 to breeders of registered New York-breds. A breeder is the owner of a mare at the time she foals in New York State. Breeder awards are determined based on the covering stallion. If a New York-bred is by a registered New York-based stallion, the award is up to 20% of the purse earned for a first-place finish, and up to 10% for a second- or third-place finish. If the New York-bred is by an out-of-state or non-registered stallion, the award is up to 10% for a first-place finish and up to 5% for a second- or third-place finish. All breeder awards are capped at $10,000 per horse, per race.

Stallion Owner Awards

The New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund distributed $2,370,035 in 2009 stallion owner awards. These awards are paid to owners of registered New York-based (at the time of conception) covering stallions at up to 7% of purses earned from finishes in first through third place. All stallion owner awards are capped at $10,000 per horse, per race.

Open Owner Awards

Owners of registered New York-breds who earned purse money in open-company races were paid $1,107,667 by the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund in 2009. The owner award for a registered New York-bred sired by a registered New York-based stallion is up to 20% of purses earned from finishes in first through third place in races run for a claiming price of $30,000 and upward, with a cap of $20,000 per horse, per race. If a New York-bred is by an out-of-state or non-registered stallion, the award is up to 10% of purses earned from finishes in first through third place in races run for a claiming price of $30,000 and upward, with a cap of $20,000 per horse, per race.

Races for New York-Breds

Annually, over 45 stakes races are run at New York Racing Association racetracks (Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course) and Finger Lakes Racetrack exclusively for registered New York-breds, with total purses of over $4 million. In 2009, over 900 overnight races were run exclusively for registered New York-breds at New York racetracks.
